Mbongeni Buthelezi
Mbongeni Buthelezi, from Johannesburg, makes “paintings” out of plastic waste: he cuts coloured plastic into small pieces and glues them to canvas. He studied in Johannesburg in 1986–1992 and 1997–1998 and took part in residency programmes in Germany and the United States. His work has been shown at the Museum of African Art in New York, at the museum in Goch and at the Prague Biennale.

Fernando Fader
Fernando Fader was born in Bordeaux, was taken to Argentina as a two-year-old, studied in Munich and in 1906 showed his work for the first time in Buenos Aires. In 1915 he won a gold medal in San Francisco, and in Córdoba he painted his best-known landscapes of country life. In 1932 the galleries of Buenos Aires mounted a retrospective of 119 of his works.29.08.1892–04.04.1985
Ramón Alva de la Canal
In 1922 Ramón Alva de la Canal painted “The Landing of the Cross” at the San Ildefonso College in Mexico City: by the available accounts, the first fresco of the twentieth century in Mexico. He was also an engraver, a book illustrator, a theatre director and a teacher. His largest work is fifty-six fresco panels on the monument to Morelos on the island of Janitzio.03.03.1948–present
Rick Amor
Rick Amor (born 1948) was among the first Australian artists appointed Official War Artist to East Timor, in 1999, and the first such appointee since the Vietnam War. His paintings, prints and bronze sculptures are built on solitary figures, twilit urban spaces and quiet interiors. In 2007 he won the McClelland Award for Sculpture for “Relic”.

Balthus
At thirteen, Balthus (born Balthasar Klossowski, later Klossowski de Rola) published a series of drawings about a lost cat named Mitsou, with a preface by Rilke. His 1934 exhibition in Paris and “The Guitar Lesson” brought him scandalous fame. He painted portraits, landscapes and interiors with adolescent girls, directed the French Academy in Rome and died in Rossinière, Switzerland.

Yi Sanhae
Yi Sanhae (1539–1609) is said to have been writing poems at the age of five, and by fifteen he was known for his calligraphy and painting. He later became leader of the Northerners faction at the court of King Seonjo and held the highest office in the state several times. In 1592, at the start of the Imjin War, he was sent into exile; after his return he helped Gwanghae to the throne.14.03.1925–08.03.1966
Abdel Hadi Al Gazzar
Abdel Hadi Al Gazzar (1925–1966) grew up in the Sayyida Zaynab district of Cairo, abandoned medical school for painting and at twenty joined the Contemporary Art Group. He studied in Cairo and Rome, won prizes at biennials and in 1964 received a state award for his painting “The High Dam”. He died at forty.

Ángel Della Valle
Ángel Della Valle studied in Florence under Antonio Ciseri and became one of the painters of the “Generation of ’80” in Buenos Aires. His best-known picture is “The Return of the Malón” (1892), shown at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. For eighteen years he taught drawing at the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts and died in the middle of a lesson.

José de Alcíbar
José de Alcíbar worked in Mexico City in the second half of the eighteenth century and was one of the founders of the Royal Academy of San Carlos, where he taught until his death. He painted altarpieces and pictures for churches, and portraits of a viceroy and of clergy. His paintings are held in Mexico, Madrid and Budapest.

Margaret Stoddart
Margaret Olrog Stoddart (1865–1934) studied at Christchurch’s first art school from the year it opened, and at twenty joined the council of the Canterbury Society of Arts. The Canterbury Museum bought twelve of her botanical watercolours. She spent more than nine years painting in England, France and Italy, then returned and taught in New Zealand for the rest of her life.

Juan Gris
Juan Gris (1887–1927) was born José Victoriano González-Pérez and took his pseudonym in 1905, a year before leaving for Paris. He first earned his living with satirical drawings for magazines, began to paint seriously in 1911 and joined the circle of the Cubists. He exhibited through Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, worked for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, and in 1924 gave a lecture at the Sorbonne on the possibilities of painting.

Kang Hŭian
Kang Hŭian, a scholar and painter of the early Joseon period, regarded painting as an idle pastime and turned away those who asked him for pictures, so little of his work survives. He passed the gwageo examination in 1441, served in the Hall of Worthies under Sejong, took part in work on the hangul script and wrote the first Korean treatise on gardening. The best-known work attributed to him is “A Scholar Contemplating Water”.19.04.1945–present
Dele Jegede
Dele Jegede began as a cartoonist and was art editor of the Lagos newspaper the Daily Times from 1974 to 1977, before becoming an art historian. His 1983 dissertation is regarded as the first work devoted entirely to contemporary Nigerian art. He led the Society of Nigerian Artists from 1989 to 1992 and has taught in the United States since 1993.

José Sabogal
José Sabogal (1888–1956) showed in Lima in 1919 canvases painted during six months in Cuzco, and made the Andean indigenous people a subject for serious painting; the exhibition caused a scandal. From 1932 to 1943 he directed the capital’s School of Fine Arts and gathered a circle of pupils around him. He also wrote essays on Peruvian popular art.

Armando Menocal
Armando Menocal (1863–1942) painted “The Oath of Santa Gadea” in 1887 and sent his canvas “The Embarkation of Columbus by Bobadilla” to the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where the chains had to be removed from the picture. In 1895 he left his teaching post to join the Liberation Army, and after the war he returned to the San Alejandro academy and became its director in 1927.1943–present
Gretchen Albrecht
Gretchen Albrecht (born 1943) began with figurative work in which the protagonist was always a woman, often nude, and by the early 1970s had moved to abstraction, starting from the landscapes of Auckland’s West Coast. She is known for her semicircular canvases, the “Hemispheres”, first painted in Dunedin in 1981, and for her oval paintings. Since the 2000s she has also made oval metal sculptures.

Paula Modersohn-Becker
Paula Modersohn-Becker lived to thirty-one and left about 750 paintings and a thousand drawings. She studied in Berlin and Paris, lived in the Worpswede artists’ colony, and twice left her husband for Paris. She was the first known woman painter to make a nude self-portrait; a museum bearing her name opened in Bremen in 1927.1921–09.06.2019
İbrahim Balaban
İbrahim Balaban (1921–2019) grew up in the village of Seçköy near Bursa, finished three grades of village school and became a painter in prison, where the poet Nâzım Hikmet noticed him. His first solo exhibition was held in Istanbul in 1953, and there were more than fifty in all. Balaban painted the life of rural Anatolia and folk tales, and also wrote books: memoirs of Hikmet, novels and stories.15.02.1919–04.07.2006
Frans Claerhout
Frans Claerhout (1919–2006) left West Flanders for South Africa as a Catholic missionary at twenty-seven and stayed there until his death. A self-taught painter who worked in his spare time, he filled his canvases with donkeys, sunflowers and people from around his mission near Bloemfontein. He exhibited in South Africa, Belgium, Canada, Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom, and gave the proceeds of his work to housing and schools for his parishioners.

Juan Lepiani
Juan Lepiani (1864–1932) painted scenes from the war over the coast that Peru fought against Chile in 1879–1884, and from the Spanish conquest of the Incas. The best known, “The Answer” (1891), shows Colonel Francisco Bolognesi rejecting a demand to surrender Arica. From the 1900s Lepiani lived in Rome, where he mostly copied the Old Masters.

Rafael Blanco
Rafael Blanco Estera of Havana won a gold medal at the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville in 1930 and was three times Cuban chess champion, in 1914, 1920 and 1937. He drew caricatures and painted gouaches, took part in the Salons of Humorists, and his work is held by the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana.

James Nairn
Scottish by birth, James Nairn emigrated to New Zealand in 1890 and brought with him the Impressionist methods he had learned in Glasgow and Paris. He painted Wellington harbour and the Hutt Valley outdoors, taught at the Wellington School of Design and founded the Wellington Art Club, which many local artists attended.
