Nandalal Bose
Nandalal Bose (1882–1966) abandoned a commerce college for the Calcutta School of Art and became a pupil of Abanindranath Tagore. From 1921 he headed Kala Bhavana in Santiniketan and trained a whole generation of Indian artists. In 1930 he made a linocut of Gandhi’s Salt March, and later decorated the handwritten text of the Constitution of India.03.03.1966–present

Ade Adekola, born March 3, 1966, in Lagos, is a Nigerian multidisciplinary artist known for photography, painting, textile, digital art, and writing. He works actively within Nigeria's cultural scene and lives in Lagos.

Emilio Boggio
Emilio Boggio (1857–1920) grew up in Paris, where he was brought as a child, studied with Jean-Paul Laurens and won a bronze medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. Around 1900 he turned to Impressionism, and in 1910 he settled in Auvers-sur-Oise, where Van Gogh had lived, and died there. His 1919 exhibition in Caracas influenced Venezuelan painters, among them Armando Reverón.

Robert Field
Robert Field (1769–1819) was born in London but made his name as a miniature portraitist in the United States: in 1800, commissioned by Martha Washington, he painted two groups of miniatures of George Washington. In 1808, on the eve of the War of 1812, he moved to Halifax, where in eight years he painted, possibly, about 150 portraits. He died in Kingston, Jamaica.

Zofia Szeptycka
Zofia Szeptycka, born Fredro, the daughter of the comedy writer Aleksander Fredro, studied drawing with a Czech painter in Lviv and then in Paris, where she copied in the Louvre. Her religious paintings hung in churches in Lviv, Kraków and Zhovkva, and her portraits of her parents are considered the best of her work. She also wrote family memoirs, published in 1900–1903.

Kadambari Devi
Kadambari Devi (born Matangini Gangopadhyay) married Jyotirindranath Tagore when she was nine and became a friend and first reader to his younger brother Rabindranath. In the summer of 1883 the three of them lived together in Karwar. Her name has survived mainly because of this friendship and the films made about her.10.08.1948–present
Evelyn Ashamallah
Evelyn Ashamallah (born 1948) graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Alexandria University in 1973, lived in Algeria for several years, and worked in Cairo museums: as director of the Mohammed Nagy Museum in 1993–1995 and of the Egypt Modern Art Museum in 2000–2002. Her paintings are built as short stories, with bright colours and deliberately unrealistic proportions.

Jacobo Borges
Jacobo Borges (born 1931) grew up in Catia, a poor district of Caracas, and in his early twenties won a scholarship to Paris with the painting “The Lamp and the Chair”. In 1967 he staged the multimedia installation “Imagen de Caracas” in the centre of the city and gave up painting for five years to work in film and theatre. He designed for the stage, made films, drew and painted; in 1995 a museum bearing his name opened in Catia.

Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez
Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez studied at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico under the Catalan painter Pelegrí Clavé, taught drawing in Toluca, and then travelled to Europe and the United States. He worked in Colombia for about twenty years and helped found its National School of Fine Arts. In Mexico he is remembered both as a portraitist and as the author of “Huntress of the Andes”, the first full female nude shown at the Academy of San Carlos.

Rita Ackermann
Rita Ackermann, born Rita Bakos, studied in Budapest, then moved to New York in 1992 and took her grandmother’s surname. In 1994 she was commissioned to make a faux stained-glass window for the New Museum, and that same year she had her first solo exhibition. She has worked in painting, drawing and collage; from 2014 she showed “chalkboard paintings” that resemble chalk marks on a school blackboard.10.12.1948–12.06.2018
Freddy Sofian
Freddy Sofian (1948–2018) was born and died in Bandung. He studied at the Rangga Djempol Studio under Barli Sasmitawinata, showed a composition of broken chairs at the 1979 New Art Movement exhibition, and later became an abstract painter. He held six solo exhibitions, from Ubud to Kuala Lumpur, and signed the 2005 manifesto of abstract artists in Jakarta.

Ayanda Mabulu
The South African artist Ayanda Mabulu (born 1981) painted a picture in 2010 showing nude politicians, among them President Jacob Zuma. It was barely noticed then, but in 2012 it surfaced in the dispute over Brett Murray’s “The Spear”. His later paintings of Zuma drew condemnation from the African National Congress and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Alejandro Christophersen
Alejandro Christophersen (1866–1946) was born in Cádiz, the son of a Norwegian consul, studied architecture in Brussels and Paris, and from the late 1880s worked in Buenos Aires. There he built the Anchorena Palace, the Stock Exchange, the Hotel Astoria and the Basilica of Santa Rosa de Lima, taught at the university and painted portraits.08.02.1930–14.12.1993
Gabriel Flores
Gabriel Flores (1930–1993) painted the walls of libraries, university auditoriums, hospitals and a tequila distillery in Guadalajara and other towns of Jalisco. In 1967 he painted a mural about the Niños Héroes, the boy cadets of the Mexican–American War, in Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City. His last work, “The History of Medicine”, was unveiled six months before his death.1658–11.11.1724
Jakob Bogdani
Jakob Bogdani was born in Eperjes in the north of the Kingdom of Hungary, went to Amsterdam in 1684 and from 1688 lived and worked in London. At the court of Queen Anne he painted still lifes and birds: cockatoos, macaws and mynas beside tits and jays. Several of his pictures entered the Royal Collection, and his patron was Admiral George Churchill.

M. V. Dhurandhar
Mahadev Vishwanath Dhurandhar (1867–1944) was connected for more than forty years with the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay: first as a student, then as a teacher, rising to vice-principal. He drew Bombay and its people, scenes from Hindu mythology, postcards and book illustrations, and in 1940 published a memoir of the school in Marathi.

Charles Collier Michell
Charles Collier Michell (1793–1851), an artillery officer, fought at Vitoria, Toulouse and Waterloo, and from 1828 served as the first surveyor-general of the Cape Colony. He designed churches and lighthouses, planned mountain roads and painted watercolour landscapes. His drawings were used to illustrate a book about a journey to West Africa by his son-in-law.29.09.1942–05.09.2014
Ana Mercedes Hoyos
Ana Mercedes Hoyos (1942–2014) began in Bogotá with Pop Art, then made the series Ventanas (Windows) and Atmósferas (Atmospheres), in which the frame disappears and only light remains. In 1978 her white “Atmósfera” won first prize at the National Salon. Later she painted still lifes of the fruit of Cartagena and devoted a large cycle to the Afro-Colombian community of San Basilio de Palenque.22.03.1923–19.04.2002
Alberto Beltrán
Alberto Beltrán (1923–2002) grew up in the poor Tepito district of Mexico City, finished only primary school, and at sixteen went to study drawing. From 1944 he worked in the Taller de Gráfica Popular, from the late 1940s drew cartoons and illustrations for the capital’s newspapers, and illustrated dozens of books. Later he made murals and mosaics in Veracruz. He never sold his engravings.

Constantin Daniel Rosenthal
Constantin Daniel Rosenthal (1820–1851) was born in Pest into a Jewish merchant family, studied in Vienna, and worked chiefly in Bucharest and Paris. He painted portraits of Wallachian nobility, took part in the 1848 revolution in Wallachia and was granted Wallachian citizenship. His best-known pictures are two allegories of Romania, painted in exile. He died in Pest after his arrest by the Austrian authorities.

Félix Resurrección Hidalgo
A Filipino painter born in Binondo, he studied in Manila and Madrid. In 1884 he won a silver medal at the Exposición General de Bellas Artes in Madrid for “Las Virgenes Cristianas Expuestas al Populacho” (“Christian Virgins Exposed to the Populace”). He later lived in Paris, where his studio became a meeting place for Filipino artists and intellectuals. He died in Barcelona in 1913 and was buried in Manila.1966–present
Ben Agbee
Ben Agbee (born Benjamin Agbenyega) studied in Ghana, worked in advertising and design, and painted in acrylic on canvas alongside. Almost all his pictures are devoted to African women, most often in profile. He has exhibited in Accra, the Netherlands, the United States and New Zealand, and took part in the Arte Fiera fair in Bologna in 1998.
