Ucha Japaridze
Ucha Japaridze (1906–1988) was born in a mountain village in Racha, studied in Tbilisi under David Kakabadze, Lado Gudiashvili and Evgeny Lanceray, and headed the Tbilisi Academy of Arts in 1942–1944. He received the Stalin Prize for the tempera “May Day Demonstration in Tiflis in 1901”. His work also includes portraits of figures of Georgian culture, scenes of rural life and illustrations to “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin”.16.05.1912–31.03.1989
Piotr Belousov
Piotr Belousov came to Leningrad in 1929 at seventeen, invited by his fellow native Isaak Brodsky, and stayed in the city for the rest of his life. His 1939 diploma work under Brodsky was the painting “Meeting of Lenin and Stalin”, and in the same year he began teaching at the institute. He is known for historical paintings on Lenin themes, portraits and drawing; People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1976).

Vladimir Moshkov
Vladimir Moshkov (1792–1839) entered the Academy of Arts at the age of nine and studied under the battle painter Mikhail Ivanov. His picture of the 1813 Battle of Leipzig brought him the title of academician, and later he travelled with a diplomatic mission to Persia and with the army to Asia Minor. He spent his last years in Tiflis and Astrakhan, where he served in the customs department.

Fyodor Buchholz
Fyodor Buchholz (1857–1942) was born in Włocławek into a printer’s family, graduated from the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and taught drawing for almost half a century. In 1900 he painted the watercolour “Ilya Repin among Friends”, and in 1918 he made sketches for the festive decoration of Petrograd. He died in besieged Leningrad and lies in the Smolensky Lutheran Cemetery beside his wife, the sculptor Maria Dillon.

Stepan Aghajanian
Stepan Aghajanian (1863–1940) was born in Shusha into a tailor’s family, studied in Marseille and at the Académie Julian in Paris, and for almost two decades taught drawing in Rostov-on-Don. In Yerevan, where he moved in 1922, he painted most of his best portraits: “Uncle Sedrak”, “The Street Child”, his self-portraits. The main collection of his work is in the National Gallery of Armenia.15.09.1877–08.03.1967
Olena Kulchytska
Olena Kulchytska (1877–1967) studied in Lviv and Vienna, and from 1909 exhibited and illustrated books, among them children’s books, in the western Ukrainian lands. She drew designs for rugs woven by her sister and travelled on foot through almost all of western Ukraine, making watercolours of folk architecture and dress. After her death a memorial museum opened in Lviv.

Mykola Burachek
Mykola Burachek (1871–1942) came to painting by way of the stage: until the age of thirty he acted in provincial theatres, and only then went to study in Kraków and later in Paris. He painted mostly Ukrainian landscapes, was among the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts in 1917 and taught in Kharkiv. Later he turned to studying the legacy of Taras Shevchenko.

Ivan Popov
Ivan Popov (1874–1945) grew up in the family of a Yakut priest, studied drawing in St Petersburg under Aleksandr Makovsky and opened the first icon-painting and art workshop in Yakutsk. Between about 1910 and 1914 he travelled on ethnographic expeditions across Yakutia and Buryatia, photographing and collecting for museums in the capital and in Germany. In January 1945 he was named People’s Artist of the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

Jan Krzysztof Damel
Jan Damel studied in Vilnius, where he took a master’s degree, was convicted in 1820 in a case of forged banknotes and spent two years in exile in Tobolsk. He painted historical scenes, portraits of the gentry and altarpieces. He died in Minsk; over his grave in the church a painting, “The Agony in the Garden”, was hung, which was considered his best work.25.02.1879–19.12.1955
Alexander Lubimov
Alexander Lubimov (1879–1955) was born in a village in Kursk Province into a noble family, studied under Ilya Repin and received the title of artist for his painting “Cain”. From 1912 to 1919 he directed the Kharkiv art school, where Alexander Deineka was among his pupils. From 1927 he lived in Leningrad, taught at the Repin Institute and the Mukhina school, and painted portraits and drew satirical sheets.15.04.1909–04.02.1998
Yeranuhi Aslamazyan
Yeranuhi Aslamazyan studied in Yerevan and at the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Leningrad, taught in Leningrad, and from the 1940s lived in Moscow. She painted portraits, landscapes of Armenia and still lifes, and also worked in printmaking and ceramics. Together with her elder sister Mariam she gave more than six hundred of her works to a gallery in Gyumri.

Oleksa Novakivskyi
Oleksa Novakivskyi (1872–1935) was born into a forester's family in a Podolian village, studied in Odessa and at the Kraków Academy, and lived near Kraków for ten years. In 1913, at the invitation of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, he moved to Lviv, where he founded an art school that trained dozens of Galician painters. His works include “Self-Portrait with a Brush”, the portrait of his wife “My Muse”, and the panels “Science” and “Folk Art”.

Vasily Pereplyotchikov
Vasily Pereplyotchikov grew up in a Moscow merchant family and first prepared for a commercial career, but after meeting Ivan Shishkin he chose painting. From 1902 he travelled to the Russian North every year, and in 1913 he reached Novaya Zemlya. He exhibited with the Wanderers, Mir Iskusstva and the Union of Russian Artists, of which he was a founder.

Pavlo Makov
Pavlo Makov was born in Leningrad in 1958, studied in Simferopol and Kharkiv, and lives in Kharkiv. He works in printmaking and etching and makes artist’s books and series such as “Utopia”, “The Book of Days” and “Target”. In 1990 he won the Grand Prix at the All-Union Graphics Biennial in Kaliningrad, in 2018 the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, and in 2022 he showed “Fountain of Exhaustion” in the Ukrainian pavilion at the Venice Biennale.03.12.1903–09.03.1971
Ivan Akhremchik
Ivan Akhremchik, a native of Minsk, showed a painting of the signing of the manifesto on the creation of the Byelorussian SSR at the All-Belarusian exhibition in 1929 and won first prize for it. He painted portraits, historical and revolutionary scenes, landscapes and murals, and taught in Minsk for four decades. People's Artist of the BSSR from 1949, author of “Defenders of the Brest Fortress”.14.11.1954–04.01.2010
Alexander Kostetsky
The son of Kyiv artists, Alexander Kostetsky studied under Vladimir Shatalin, showed his paintings at unofficial exhibitions in the 1970s and in 1988 travelled to the United States with his work for the first time. His painting and sculpture are classed as fantastic, or magic, realism. His works are held in the Norton Dodge museum and in collections in the Netherlands and Russia.25.10.1915–30.11.2000
Olga Bogaevskaya
Olga Bogaevskaya (1915–2000) graduated from Alexander Osmerkin’s studio at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, with a diploma painting titled “Meeting of a Friend”. All her life she painted children’s portraits and still lifes, indoors and in the open air. Her pictures are in the Russian Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery, and in 1989–1992 they were shown in France at exhibitions and auctions of the “Leningrad School”.

Ivan Blinov
Ivan Blinov, from the village of Kudashikha near Gorodets, copied and illuminated about two hundred manuscripts in his lifetime, from “The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom” to several copies of “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign”. His clients were Old Believer collectors and the imperial court. After 1917 he ran the museum in Gorodets, and then went back to his home village.07.10.1892–02.07.1980
Joseph Spinel
Joseph Spinel came from a poor Jewish teacher's family in Bila Tserkva and became one of the most sought-after designers in Soviet cinema: he designed more than sixty films, among them “Arsenal”, “Alexander Nevsky” and “Ivan the Terrible”. In the 1920s he illustrated books in a Constructivist manner. From 1940 he taught at VGIK, the state film institute in Moscow, where he trained many students.

Henryk Weyssenhoff
Henryk Weyssenhoff (1859–1922) spent his childhood in the Urals, where his father, a participant in the uprising of 1863, had been exiled. He studied in Warsaw under Wojciech Gerson and at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, graduating with a silver medal for “Transport of the Wounded”. He painted lyrical landscapes with forest animals and birds, lived on an estate near Minsk and illustrated books by his cousin.01.01.1896–29.06.1976
Vasyl Kasiian
Vasyl Kasiian was born in Mikulyntsi in Galicia, served in the Austro-Hungarian army, studied in Prague under Max Švabinský, and in 1927 moved to Soviet Ukraine. He taught at the art institutes of Kyiv and Kharkiv, illustrated Shevchenko’s “Kobzar” five times over, and made posters in evacuation in Samarkand during the war. In 1944 he became People’s Painter of the USSR.15.06.1925–31.08.1985
Vasily Golubev
Vasily Golubev (1925–1985) was born into a peasant family in a village in Kostroma province, served as a tank driver in the war and came back disabled. He finished art school at twenty-seven and joined the Artists' Union in 1966. He became known for lyrical landscapes of the Russian countryside; in the 1970s and 1980s his brushwork grew more generalised and expressionist, with touches of primitivism.
