Vasily Khudyakov
Vasily Khudyakov was born a serf in a village in Simbirsk Governorate, and in 1851 the Academy of Arts made him an academician for his portrait of its rector for architecture. His “Skirmish with Finnish Smugglers” became in 1856 the first Russian painting bought by Pavel Tretyakov. He worked in Italy for four years and was a professor of the Academy from 1860.

Mikayil Abdullayev
Mikayil Abdullayev (1921–2002) studied in Baku under Sadykh Bakhlulzade, then in Moscow under Sergey Gerasimov, and graduated from the Surikov Institute in 1949. He painted portraits of Azerbaijani poets and composers, brought back from his travels in India the cycle “Through India”, for which he received the Nehru Award, and made a mosaic with scenes from Nizami for the Baku metro.06.03.1968–present
Rinat Voligamsi
Rinat Voligamsi (born 1968), a native of the Bashkir village of Yermolaevo, trained as an architect. He paints surrealist pictures from memory, working from old Soviet newspaper photographs. His cycles include “Unofficial Album”, “Snow” and “The Village”. His work is held by the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the Russian Museum, Erarta and several foreign collections.

Fedir Krychevsky
Fedir Krychevsky (1879–1947) entered the academic competition of 1910 with “The Bride”: a scene in which friends dress a girl for her wedding, treated as a solemn frieze. He was the first rector of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, painted the triptych “Life” (1925–1927) and taught Tetyana Yablonska. He spent his last years in Irpin, stripped of his titles.31.05.1892–04.11.1968
Michel Kikoine
Michel (Mikhail) Kikoine grew up in Minsk, studied alongside Chaïm Soutine and in 1912 followed him to Paris, to the artists’ hostel La Ruche. He became a French citizen in 1924 and painted portraits, nudes and landscapes under the influence of Cézanne. He spent the Occupation near Toulouse and from 1958 lived in Cannes.

Vasily Chekrygin
Vasily Chekrygin (1897–1922) entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture at thirteen, and at twenty-three began the graphic cycles “The Execution”, “The Insane” and “The Resurrection of the Dead”. He illustrated Vladimir Mayakovsky’s poems, was among those who created the Makovets group, and wrote about art under the influence of the philosopher Nikolai Fyodorov. He was killed by a train at Mamontovka station at twenty-five.23.07.1927–07.12.2024
Dmitry Buchkin
Dmitry Buchkin (1927–2024) grew up in the family of the Leningrad artist and teacher Pyotr Buchkin. At ten he was sent with his parents to Tyumen after his father’s arrest, and he later lived through the siege of Leningrad and kept a graphic diary of it. He painted genre scenes, landscapes and portraits, worked in Staraya Ladoga and made posters. His work was shown in France and is in museums in several countries.

Mai Dantsig
Mai Dantsig (1930–2017) grew up in Minsk, was evacuated to Ulyanovsk during the war, and after his studies in Moscow taught in Minsk for almost sixty years. He painted subject pictures about partisans and the war, lyrical views of the city and portraits of writers and film directors, and made mosaics for Minsk buildings. For many years he also headed the city’s Jewish cultural association.24.02.1924–06.12.2009
Andrey Vladimirovich Vasnetsov
Andrey Vasnetsov (1924–2009) trained as a muralist after the war and made mosaics for the Museum of the History of Cosmonautics in Kaluga, the October cinema and concert hall and the Izvestia building. His easel paintings in black and brown, Breakfast among them, angered Khrushchev at the Manege in 1962. He later taught at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute and chaired the Union of Artists of the USSR.

Alexey Sergienko
Alexey Sergienko (born 1968) began by selling painted porcelain on a St. Petersburg street and grew into an author of pop art, performances and objects such as a car covered in daisies. He is known for a series of portraits of Vladimir Putin, some of which hang in government institutions. He works in his own gallery near the Kazan Cathedral and heads the Center for the Support of the Arts of St. Petersburg.

Misha Brusilovsky
Misha Brusilovsky (1931–2016) entered a boarding school for gifted children in Kyiv at thirteen, and in 1959, after the Repin Institute in Leningrad, was assigned to Sverdlovsk. There, with Gennady Mosin, he painted “1918”, and for many years afterwards worked outside the official line. In 1989 he had a retrospective in Paris. He lived and died in Yekaterinburg.

Adam Hlobus
Adam Hlobus (real name Vladimir Adamchyk) graduated from the Minsk art school and the Belarusian Theatre and Art Institute and worked as a draftsman and art restorer, but he is known above all for his poetry and short prose. In 1986–1990 he was among the founders of Tuteishyja, an association of young writers, and later published books through his own publishing house, Suchasny litaratar. Mykola Hlushchenko
Mykola Hlushchenko (1901–1977) studied in Berlin, worked in Paris from 1925, painted portraits of Romain Rolland and Henri Barbusse, and from 1944 lived in Kyiv, where landscape became his main subject. According to a number of publications, he cooperated with Soviet intelligence from 1926. People’s Artist of the USSR (1976), winner of the Shevchenko Prize.31.03.1902–24.08.1976
André Lanskoy
André Lanskoy (1902–1976) was born in Moscow, left Russia as a young man with the White Army and in 1921 arrived in Paris, where he stayed for the rest of his life. Until the 1940s he painted figures, portraits and still lifes, then turned to abstraction. For his last fourteen years he worked on illustrations for Gogol’s “Diary of a Madman”: about 150 collages and 80 lithographs.

Mykola Murashko
Mykola Murashko (1844–1909) opened a drawing school in his own home in Kyiv in 1875 and ran it until 1901; Mykola Pymonenko and Valentin Serov studied there. He painted landscapes of the Dnipro and the countryside around Kyiv, as well as a portrait of Nikolai Ge, and near the end of his life published “Memoirs of an Old Teacher” in two instalments.

Vladimir Dubossarsky
Vladimir Dubossarsky (born 1964) painted together with Alexander Vinogradov for twenty years, from 1994 to 2014; their first joint work is said to be “Picasso in Moscow”, in which Picasso stands in front of the Kremlin. The duo showed “The Underwater World” in the Russian pavilion at the 2003 Venice Biennale, and their “Luncheon on the Grass” has been in the collection of the Centre Pompidou since 2002.

Ivan Trush
Ivan Trush (1869–1941) studied in Kraków under Leon Wyczółkowski and Jan Stanisławski, lived in Lviv from 1898 and painted landscapes and portraits of Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka and Vasyl Stefanyk. He founded the first professional art societies in Galicia and published the journal “Artystychnyi visnyk”. More than six thousand works remain after him.1847–present
Rafail Levitsky
Rafail Levitsky, son of the St Petersburg photographer Sergey Levitsky, studied at the Academy of Arts as a free student alongside Ilya Repin and Vasily Polenov. From 1884 he taught at the school of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, and in 1880–1894 he exhibited with the Wanderers. He is remembered chiefly as a friend of Repin, Polenov and Leo Tolstoy; sources disagree on his date of birth.

Elena Luksch-Makowsky
Elena Luksch-Makowsky (1878–1967), daughter of the court painter Konstantin Makovsky, became the first woman member of the Vienna Secession in the early 1900s. She painted “Adolescentia”, now in the Belvedere in Vienna, and made three reliefs for the façade of the Burgtheater. From 1907 she lived in Hamburg, where her sculpture “Woman’s Fate” was installed.11.03.1979–present
Simon Kozhin
Simon Kozhin (born 1979) studied at the Moscow Academic Art Lyceum and at the Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where in 2003 he defended his diploma with the painting “Ferapontov Monastery”. He paints city and European landscapes, still lifes on panel and historical scenes, including a series on the war of 1812. His works are held in museums in Moscow, Kaluga, Penza and Surgut, and by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

Pinchus Kremegne
Pinchus Kremegne (1890–1981) left the Lida region for Paris in 1912, settled in La Ruche and in 1914 showed three sculptures at the Salon des Indépendants. From 1915 he painted mostly in oil, and from 1918 he lived in Céret in the eastern Pyrenees, where he built a house with a studio. A friend of Soutine and Kikoine, he remained in the shadow of both.05.07.1902–10.01.1970
Meer Akselrod
Meer Akselrod was born in the shtetl of Molodechno, studied at Vkhutemas and in the 1920s belonged to the society The Four Arts. After the campaign against “formalism” he turned to book illustration and the theatre, and in wartime evacuation in Alma-Ata he made the cycle “German Occupation”. Most of his paintings of Russian Jewish life became known through posthumous exhibitions.24.06.1944–present
