The Whitney Museum of American Art has announced that Meg Onli, a curator at the museum, and Zack Winokur, a choreographer and stage director, will co-curate the 2028 edition of the Whitney Biennial. The exhibition is set to open in March 2028, continuing the museum’s tradition of presenting contemporary art.
Meg Onli is currently a curator at the Whitney and most recently co-curated the museum’s Roy Lichtenstein retrospective, which will remain on view until May 2027. Her ongoing work at the museum positions her to help shape the direction of the upcoming Biennial.
Zack Winokur is a choreographer and director for the stage. He is the co-founder and artistic director of the American Modern Opera Company (AMOC*), which recently staged a five-week takeover at Lincoln Center in Manhattan. Winokur has also served as artistic director of Little Island, a cultural venue on the Hudson River near the Whitney. His stage projects include directing productions at Opera Philadelphia and the Santa Fe Opera, as well as working on an expanded version of The Wizard of Oz currently showing in Las Vegas.
The Whitney Biennial is known for being a focal point of contemporary art discourse and has often attracted debates and protests. The 2026 edition, however, was notably free of major controversy, which is unusual for the event.
The appointment of both a curator and a stage director reflects the museum’s commitment to interdisciplinary approaches and dynamic leadership. Their collaboration may bring together visual and performing arts in new ways, and the international art community will be watching as the 2028 Biennial develops under their guidance.
