Eight Artists Honored with 2026 Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts

The winners of the 2026 Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts were announced on September 16, celebrating outstanding achievements in the fields of contemporary visual and media arts. This annual recognition includes up to eight awards, honoring artistic excellence, fine craft, and significant contributions to the arts.

This year’s recipients include a range of artists and cultural advocates working in various disciplines and regions. Among them is Chung-Im Kim, a textile artist and educator based in Ontario, who received the Saidye Bronfman Award for exceptional craft processes. The Canadian Museum of History will acquire works by this awardee, continuing a tradition that connects contemporary craft with cultural heritage.

Roger Lee, an art historian and collector from Vancouver, was honored with the award for outstanding contribution. His career has notably influenced the understanding and appreciation of Asian and diasporic art histories. Lee’s renowned collection of Yixing teapots exemplifies a fusion of aesthetic inquiry and cultural memory.

Other laureates include sculptors, installation artists, filmmakers, photographers, and multidisciplinary creators such as Faye HeavyShield, Carole Itter, Zacharias Kunuk, Lyne Lapointe, Marie-Jeanne Musiol, and Skawennati. Their work spans a broad spectrum of media and cultural backgrounds, reflecting the complexity and richness of contemporary artistic expression.

Marie-Jeanne Musiol, based in Gatineau, Québec, is noted for her innovative photograms and experimental videos that capture luminous plant imprints within electromagnetic fields. Her series The Radiant Forest creates a virtual energy herbarium at the intersection of botany and electrophotography.

Each winner will receive a bronze medallion and a monetary prize, underscoring the value placed on artistic innovation and cultural contribution. An exhibition showcasing selected works from the 2026 laureates is scheduled to open at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on November 7.

The Governor General’s Awards serve as a platform to recognize the vital role of artists and cultural figures in shaping societal understanding and dialogue.
