Winslow Homer

Biography

Winslow Homer was born on February 24, 1836, in Boston, USA. He became one of the most significant American artists of the 19th century, gaining recognition as a founder of American realist painting. Homer's creative work spanned genres such as genre scenes, marine subjects, portraits, and American realism. He was known for works in both oil and watercolor. The primary theme of his art was marine landscapes, which brought him wide popularity. Throughout his career, Homer also engaged in photography, illustration, and engraving, broadening his artistic range. He created numerous notable works, including "Man With A Scythe," "Robert Junkins' Garrison House, York, Maine," "Autumn Tree Tops," "Mountain Wagon," "A Country Lad," and "Gathering Autumn Leaves," among others. Winslow Homer died on September 29, 1910, in Prouts Neck, Maine. His contribution to American art is recognized by many scholars, who consider him a leading figure of his time and influential in the further development of painting in the United States.
