Biography

Jacopo Robusti, better known as Tintoretto, was born on September 29, 1518, in Venice, then part of the Venetian Republic. He emerged as a prominent figure of the Venetian school of painting during the late Italian Renaissance and Mannerism, combining tradition and innovation in his works. As an artist, Tintoretto specialized in religious and mythological paintings as well as allegorical compositions. His art reflects characteristics of both the Renaissance and Mannerist periods. Throughout his career, he produced numerous significant works, including "The Massacre of the Innocents," "The Vision of St Peter," "The Beheading of St. Paul," "Venus, Vulcan, and Cupid," and "The Annunciation," among others. In addition to painting, he also engaged in architectural drafting. Tintoretto lived and worked entirely within the Venetian Republic, passing away on May 31, 1594, in his native city of Venice.
