Biography

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, in the Republic of the United Provinces. He emerged as one of the leading masters of 17th-century European art and the foremost representative of the Dutch Golden Age painting school. Rembrandt worked as a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker, and gained particular recognition for his use of chiaroscuro (light and shadow) and innovative etching techniques. His body of work spans a variety of genres, including portraiture, religious and mythological scenes, genre painting, historical compositions, self-portraits, landscapes, tronies, still lifes, vanitas, hunting still lifes, and winter landscapes. Among his most famous works are The Night Watch, The Jewish Bride, Belshazzar's Feast, The Syndics of the Drapers' Guild, and numerous self-portraits. In addition to his artistic production, Rembrandt was also an art dealer, a collector, and an active figure in the visual arts community. His life concluded in Amsterdam on October 4, 1669.
