Biography

Raphael Sanzio, also known as Raffaello Sanzio, was born in 1483 in Urbino, in the Holy Roman Empire, Italy. He is considered one of the most prominent artists of the Italian Renaissance and the High Renaissance period. Raphael worked within the Umbrian, Florentine, and Roman artistic schools, establishing himself as a painter, draftsman, architect, designer, and fresco artist. His artistic output encompassed historical painting, portraiture, mythological scenes, allegory, and religious art. Throughout his relatively short life of 37 years, Raphael created a series of outstanding works, including the Sistine Madonna, The School of Athens, the Raphael Rooms (Stanze di Raffaello), the Transfiguration, La Fornarina, the Marriage of the Virgin, among many others. He passed away on April 6, 1520, in Rome. Raphael's work had a significant influence on the development of visual arts and Renaissance humanism.
