Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Biography

Pieter Bruegel the Elder was born in 1525 in Breda, located at that time in Brabant, within the Habsburg Netherlands. He was a Dutch painter, draftsman, and engraver, regarded as the most significant member of the Bruegel family during the Northern Renaissance. Pieter distinguished himself as a master of landscape and genre paintings, producing numerous works across various genres including landscape, portrait, still life, animal painting, and marine scenes. Of particular importance to his work was the foundation of the "peasant genre," in which he depicted scenes from the lives of common folk, drawing upon folk proverbs and the humanist culture of his era. Among his notable works are "The Peasant Dance" and "Mad Meg." He was also the father of Pieter Bruegel the Younger, known as "Hell," and Jan Bruegel the Elder, called "Paradise." Pieter Bruegel the Elder died on September 9, 1569, in Brussels. His works form an integral part of Dutch and Flemish painting of the Renaissance and Northern Renaissance periods, with cultural ties to Brabant and the Habsburg Netherlands.
