Biography

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born on February 25, 1841, in Limoges, France. He is recognized as one of the principal representatives of Impressionism, having made a significant contribution to the development of visual art. Renoir was a painter, draftsman, and sculptor, known for his skill in society portraits and nude paintings, which are noted for their sentimentality. In addition, he worked with pastels, engraving, and lithography, as well as being a watercolorist, graphic artist, and illustrator. In the mid-1880s, Renoir departed from Impressionism, returning to a classical aesthetic known as "Ingresism." Over his sixty-year artistic career, he created approximately four thousand works, including famous paintings such as "Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette," "Luncheon of the Boating Party," "The Swing," "The Large Bathers," "Girls at the Piano," "Two Sisters (On the Terrace)," "The Umbrellas," "The Theater Box," and "Portrait of Irène Cahen d’Anvers." Renoir worked in various genres including portraiture, nudes, landscapes, genre scenes, still lifes, religious art, mythological painting, animal art, and marine art. He died on December 3, 1919, in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France.
