Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres

Biography

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres was born on August 29, 1780, in Montauban, France. He received education in both art and music. From 1797 to 1801, he studied in the studio of the painter Jacques-Louis David. In his youth, Ingres was professionally engaged in music and played in the orchestra of the Toulouse Opera from 1793 to 1796. Later, he associated with well-known musicians such as Niccolò Paganini, Luigi Cherubini, Charles Gounod, Hector Berlioz, and Franz Liszt. Ingres lived and worked in Italy during the periods 1806–1824 and 1835–1841, primarily in Rome and Florence between 1820 and 1824. He was a member of the Institut de France, specifically the Academy of Fine Arts in the painting class. He served as director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1834 to 1835 and as director of the French Academy in Rome from 1835 to 1840. His artistic work focused on portrait painting, historical painting, nudes, and Orientalism. Some of his notable works include "Venus Anadyomene," "The Grand Odalisque," "Oedipus and the Sphinx," "The Turkish Bath," "Jupiter and Thetis," "Portrait of Louis-François Bertin," "The Source," "Venus and Love," "Antiochus and Stratonice," and "Portrait of Mademoiselle Rivière." In addition to painting, Ingres was a graphic artist, draftsman, engraver, architectural draftsman, and violinist. He died on January 14, 1867, in Paris.
