Biography

James Abbott McNeill Whistler was born on July 10, 1834, in Lowell, USA. He was an artist skilled in various visual art forms, including portrait painting, etching, and lithography. Whistler is recognized as a notable representative of tonalism, a movement that foreshadowed Impressionism and Symbolism. His work encompassed genres such as portraiture, historical painting, landscape, nudes, marine subjects, and architectural painting. Whistler was affiliated with the aestheticism and symbolism movements. Beyond painting, he worked as a designer, illustrator, writer, printmaker, and graphic artist. Among his well-known works are 'Nocturne in Blue and Gold: Old Battersea Bridge,' 'Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket,' 'Whistler’s Mother,' and 'The Peacock Room.'
