Ilya Repin

Biography

Ilya Yefimovich Repin was born on July 24, 1844, in the town of Chuhuiv. He was a Russian painter and draftsman, as well as a graphic artist, sculptor, essayist, and teacher. Repin is regarded as one of the most influential and versatile artists during the era of great reforms and counter-reforms. In his artistic work, he specialized in genre painting, historical painting, and portraiture, demonstrating a strong inclination toward realism. Throughout his career, Repin held the positions of academician, professor, and full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts. He also taught at the Higher Art School and was a member of the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions, actively participating in the development of Russian art. Among his notable works are "Barge Haulers on the Volga," "Religious Procession in the Kursk Province," "The Zaporozhian Cossacks," and "The Solemn Session of the State Council on May 7, 1901." Ilya Yefimovich Repin passed away on September 29, 1930, in Repino.
