Jean-Désiré-Gustave Courbet was born on June 10, 1819, in Ornans, France. He was a French painter known for his severe, concise style and as one of the founders of realism in painting. Courbet created more than a thousand paintings spanning various genres, including portrait, nude, landscape, animal, and genre painting. His works during 1848–1849 challenged the standards of academicism, idealism, and romanticism, provoking scandals among the public. In addition to painting, the artist also engaged in drawing and sculpture. Among Courbet's most notable works are "The Origin of the World," "The Burial at Ornans," and "Source of a Mountain Stream." He died on December 31, 1877, in La-Tour-de-Peilz, France.
