Frans Hals

Biography

Frans Hals, also known as Franz Hals, was born in 1591 in Antwerp. He was a Dutch painter associated with the Baroque era and the Dutch Golden Age, and was part of the Dutch Republic. Hals specialized in portrait and genre painting, including portraits of officers from civic militia companies. He is recognized as a master of portraiture and was the older brother of the painter Dirk Hals. Frans Hals died on August 26, 1666, in Haarlem. Among his notable works are "Portrait of Willem Heythuyssen," "The Laughing Cavalier," "Malle Babbe," and "The Banquet of the Officers of the St George Militia Company in 1616." In addition to painting, Hals was also engaged as a printmaker and architectural draftsman, showing a versatile involvement in the visual arts.
