Biography

Fra Beato Angelico, also known simply as Angelico, was born Guido di Pietro in 1400 in the town of Vicchio. Upon entering monastic life, he took the name Giovanni da Fiesole and became a member of the Dominican Order. He is recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church. Angelico was active during the Italian Renaissance, specifically within the Early Renaissance (Quattrocento) of the Florentine school. His primary artistic focus was religious art. Throughout his career, he combined various roles including painter, manuscript illuminator, miniature artist, fresco painter, and architectural draftsman. Some of his most notable works include the "Annunciation," the "Niccoline Chapel," the San Marco Altarpiece, and numerous scenes featuring Saints Cosmas and Damian. Fra Angelico passed away on February 18, 1455 in Florence. He was beatified in 1983 and canonized in 1984. His feast day is celebrated on February 18.
