Biography

Doménikos Theotokópoulos, better known as El Greco, was born on October 1, 1541, in Heraklion. He was a painter, sculptor, architect, architectural draftsman, and printmaker of Greek origin. El Greco worked during the late Spanish Renaissance and Mannerism, maintaining cultural connections with the Kingdom of Castile and León as well as the Venetian Republic. His oeuvre encompassed various genres including religious painting, portraiture, mythological scenes, genre and historical painting, iconography, and landscapes. Throughout his lifetime, he produced significant works such as "The Resurrection of Christ," "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz," "View of Toledo," "Knight with Hand on Chest," and "Assumption of the Virgin," among others. He left an important mark on Spanish art, often signing his works in Greek letters with his full name and occasionally adding the word 'Kris.' El Greco passed away on April 7, 1614, in the city of Toledo.
