Claude Lorrain

Biography

Claude Lorrain was a French painter, draftsman, and engraver, considered one of the prominent masters of landscape painting in French classicism. He was born in 1600 in the town of Chamagne, located in the Duchy of Lorraine. Claude received his artistic education and developed his creative career while working in Italy, where he acquired the surname “Lorrain” based on his place of birth. His work focused mainly on the landscape genre, and he gained recognition as both a painter and engraver. Claude Lorrain created his artworks within the framework of classicism, one of the key artistic movements of the 17th century. Among his notable works are "Village Fête," "Seaport with the Embarkation of Saint Ursula," "Landscape with the Finding of Moses," "Sea Port at Sunset," as well as the "Book of Truth." He lived a long life and passed away on November 23, 1682, in Rome.
