Biography

Little is known about Christopher Oywecha’s life: his years of life and place of birth are unknown, and one has to rely on his exhibitions.

He is a Kenyan artist and works in the manner of abstract expressionism. His main materials are oil and acrylic, and his colouring is bright, with earth tones predominating. He describes his works as his own perception of the human condition, conveyed through abstract interpretations of daily life. On his canvases he portrays people’s faces and emotions, as well as the events that affect them and the environment in which they live. His exhibition history is known from 1993, and over just nine years, from 1993 to 2002, it comes to six exhibitions. In 1993 there were two at once: “Nyuzi Za Maisha” (“Fabric of Life”) at the National Museum of Kenya and “Artistic Voices” at the French Cultural Centre in Nairobi. In 1994 “Art and Poetry” was shown at the same French Cultural Centre. In 1997 he took part in the exhibition “East African Art” at the National Museum of Kenya. In 2000 his work was in “Bomb Terror” at the Goethe Institute in Nairobi. The last known exhibition, “Several Perspectives”, was held in 2002 at the French Cultural Centre in Nairobi. This list shows that his work was shown both in a national museum and in the foreign cultural centres of the capital.

Apart from exhibitions, he produced work for projects connected with the United Nations, and showed his work in various institutions in Kenya. Which projects these were and when they took place is not known for certain.
