Angelica Kauffman

Biography

Maria Anna Angelika Katharina Kauffman, known as Angelica Kauffman, was born on October 30, 1741, in Chur, Switzerland. She was an 18th-century artist representing the Neoclassical style, working primarily in portrait and history painting genres. Angelica achieved significant recognition in the professional art world, which was particularly notable during a time when women rarely gained such acknowledgment. She was one of only two women among the founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1768. Additionally, she was a member of four Italian art academies. Kauffman was an active visual artist and held the status of an engraver. Her body of work includes notable pieces such as the portrait of Winckelmann and the portrait of David Garrick. Angelica Kauffman passed away on November 5, 1807, in Rome.
