Alfred Sisley

Biography

Alfred Sisley was born on October 30, 1839, in the former 4th arrondissement of Paris. Though French by nationality, he was of English descent, thereby blending cultural traditions of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland with those of France. Sisley became a notable figure within Impressionism, an art movement focused on capturing light and natural phenomena. His artistic work concentrated particularly on landscapes and still lifes. Among his most recognized paintings are "Flooding at Port-Marly," "Le chemin de la Machine, Louveciennes," and "La Place du Chenil à Marly, effet de neige." Sisley engaged in visual arts not only as a painter but also as an etcher and lithographer. He spent the majority of his life in France, passing away on January 29, 1899, and was interred at the Moret-sur-Loing cemetery.
