Yuhanna al-Armani

Biography

Yuhanna al-Armani al-Qudsi was born in 1720 in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. Although he spent his entire life in Egypt, he was of Armenian descent. His primary profession was as a painter, with his work largely focused on religious themes. He is best known as the creator of Coptic icons that adorn the Church of St. Mary in Old Cairo, one of the oldest Christian churches in Egypt. Yuhanna al-Armani died in 1786 in Cairo. His works occupy a significant place in the history of 18th-century Egyptian art. He followed the traditions of Coptic painting while incorporating elements of Armenian culture, reflecting his ethnic and cultural heritage. The artist’s creative legacy is preserved through his contributions to the decoration of churches and religious monuments in Egypt.
