Yayoi Kusama

Biography

Yayoi Kusama was born on March 22, 1929, in Matsumoto, Japan. She is an artist, writer, and poet working within abstraction, contemporary art, art feminism, and pop art. Kusama produces paintings, collages, soft sculptures, performances, and installations, characterized by an obsessive use of repetition, patterns, and accumulation. Her work incorporates elements of various art movements, including minimalism, surrealism, art brut, pop art, and abstract expressionism, often filled with autobiographical and psychological content. Apart from visual arts, she is also engaged in film and fashion design. Kusama describes herself as an “obsessive artist” and has struggled with mental illness. Her roles encompass conceptual artist, sculptor, performer, collage artist, video artist, fashion designer, architectural draftsman, illustrator, and photographer. Her work remains significant in the field of contemporary art.
