Xu Beihong
Xu Beihong (1895–1953) was a Chinese painter and graphic artist, one of the first 20th-century artists to combine traditional Chinese art with European styles. Born in Yixing, he is known for his portraits and the painting "Put Down Your Whip."

Xu Beihong was born on July 19, 1895, in the city of Yixing, China. He was a notable Chinese painter and graphic artist, recognized as one of the first artists of the 20th century to successfully merge traditional Chinese artistic traditions with developments in European painting. Xu's career spanned significant historical periods, including the Qing Empire, the Republic of China, and beyond. His artistic work notably includes portraiture, with one of his most famous paintings being "Put Down Your Whip." In addition to his artistic production, Xu Beihong was also an educator, dedicating himself to passing on his knowledge and experience to new generations of artists. He died on September 26, 1953, in Beijing.
