Wu Zhihui
Wu Zhihui (March 25, 1865 – October 30, 1953) was a Chinese linguist, philosopher, politician, and artist. He chaired the Commission on the Unification of Pronunciation in 1912–1913, which created the Zhuyin phonetic system and standardized the pronunciation of the national language, Guoyu.
Biography
Wu Zhihui, also known as Wu Jinghen, was born on March 25, 1865, in Wujin. He was a Chinese linguist, philosopher, politician, artist, and erudite. Between 1912 and 1913, Wu Zhihui served as the chairman of the Commission on the Unification of Pronunciation, which developed the Zhuyin phonetic system and standardized the pronunciation of the national language of China, Guoyu. His activities took place amid significant historical changes, including the Qing Empire period, the Republic of China, and the Republic of China in Taiwan. Wu Zhihui is also associated with the anarchism movement. He passed away on October 30, 1953, in Taipei. His contributions span several fields—from linguistics and philosophy to politics and art—reflecting his multifaceted professional activity and impact on the development of Chinese culture and science in the early 20th century.
