Willem de Kooning

Biography

Willem de Kooning was born on April 24, 1904, in Rotterdam. He was an artist and sculptor whose creative career spanned the second half of the twentieth century. De Kooning is regarded as one of the leading representatives of abstract expressionism and is also known as a printmaker, draftsman, designer, and university teacher. His work encompasses genres such as figurativism, abstraction, landscape, and portrait. He was associated with movements including abstract expressionism and action painting. Throughout his life, de Kooning held cultural ties to both the United States of America and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Some of his well-known works include "Woman I," "Woman III," and "Seated Woman on a Bench." Willem de Kooning passed away on March 19, 1997, in East Hampton.
