Wifredo Lam
Wifredo Lam (1902–1982) was a Cuban and French artist, graphic artist, ceramist, and sculptor. Born in Sagua la Grande, he worked in self-portrait and figurativism genres. In the 1930s, he was influenced by Pablo Picasso and Surrealism, blending Latin American and African motifs. He died in Boulogne-Billancourt.
Biography
Wifredo Oscar de la Concepción Lam y Castilla, known as Wifredo Lam, was born on December 8, 1902, in the city of Sagua la Grande in Cuba. He was a Cuban and French artist, graphic artist, illustrator, sculptor, ceramist, as well as a monumental artist and printmaker. Lam worked in the genres of self-portrait and figurativism. In the 1930s, he experienced the influence of Pablo Picasso's work and the Surrealist movement, which contributed to the formation of his unique style, in which he incorporated Latin American and African motifs. He was an active representative of the Surrealism art movement and had cultural ties with both Cuba and France. Wifredo Lam passed away on September 11, 1982, in Boulogne-Billancourt, France.
