Biography

Wayne Barker is a South African visual artist born on July 27, 1963, in Pretoria. In his creative practice, Barker works as a conceptual artist and installation artist. He gained wide recognition in the late 1980s during the political unrest and apartheid period in South Africa. Barker is based in Johannesburg and creates artworks in diverse media including painting, printmaking, sculpture, video, performance, and installation. In addition to solo projects, he is known for collaborating with other artists and the Qubeka Beadwork studio from Cape Town, where he produces large-scale works made from glass beads. Barker’s art has been presented at various international biennales, art fairs, and retrospective exhibitions, underscoring his significance in contemporary South African and global art.
