Vladimir Makovsky

Biography

Vladimir Yegorovich Makovsky was born on January 26, 1846, in Moscow. He was a Russian painter and graphic artist of the post-reform era, whose creative work took place in both Moscow and Saint Petersburg (later Petrograd). Makovsky was known as an advocate of "democratic realism" and primarily worked in the genre painting style focusing on everyday life. In addition to his artistic career, he was involved in pedagogical activities. He belonged to a notable artistic family: he was the younger brother of Alexandra, Konstantin, and Nikolay Makovsky, and the father and mentor of Alexander Makovsky. His life and work were closely connected with the cultural and historical events of the Russian Empire and the RSFSR. Vladimir Yegorovich Makovsky passed away on February 21, 1920, in Saint Petersburg.
