Violeta Parra
Violeta Parra (October 4, 1917 – February 5, 1967) was a Chilean singer, poet, artist, and folklorist. Founder of the Nueva canción movement, she created well-known works such as "Gracias a la vida" and "El gavilán" and contributed broadly to Chilean cultural life.
Biography
Violeta del Carmen Parra Sandoval was born on October 4, 1917, in San Carlos, Ñuble Province, Chile. She was a Chilean singer, poet, artist, and folklorist. Parra became the founder of the Nueva canción ("New Song") movement, a genre blending elements of Chilean folk music and protest song. As a singer-songwriter, she created well-known works including "Gracias a la vida", "El gavilán", and "Volver a los 17". Beyond music, Violeta Parra was a sculptor, painter, embroiderer, ceramist, and ethnologist, dedicating a significant part of her life to collecting and studying Chilean folk art. She also worked as a writer, poet, and cultural figure, leaving a noticeable impact on the cultural life of her country. Violeta Parra passed away on February 5, 1967, in La Reina. Her legacy continues to influence the development of Chilean music and culture.
