Vilhelms Purvītis
Vilhelms Purvītis (1872–1945) was a Latvian landscape painter and founder of the Latvian Academy of Arts, serving as its rector from 1919 to 1934. A student of A. I. Kuindzhi, he worked in impressionism and expressionism and contributed significantly to Latvian art education.
Biography
Vilhelms Kārlis Purvītis, also known as Kārlis Jurgisovich or Vilhelm Egorovich Purvītis, was a prominent Latvian landscape painter born on March 3, 1872, in Zaube parish. He studied under the well-known painter A. I. Kuindzhi and became one of the founders of modern Latvian painting. Purvītis established the Latvian Academy of Arts, where he served as rector from 1919 to 1934. His painting style encompassed impressionism and expressionism. Throughout his life, he was connected with the cultural traditions of several states, including the Russian Empire, Latvia, the USSR, and the German Reich. Vilhelms Purvītis passed away on January 14, 1945, in Bad Nauheim. Besides his work as a painter, he was also an educator and professor, making a significant contribution to the development of art education in Latvia.
