Vicente Manansala
Vicente Manansala (1910–1981) was a Filipino artist and illustrator known for his Cubist style and as an early abstract painter in the Philippines. His works blend rural and urban imagery, reflecting the transitional cultural period under American influence.
Biography
Vicente Manansala was born on January 22, 1910, in Macabebe, Philippines. He became a well-known artist and illustrator working in the Cubist style and was among the first representatives of abstractionism in the Filipino art scene. Manansala earned recognition for his ability to combine images of urban and suburban life with rural and cosmopolitan culture, thus reflecting the transitional period of Philippine society influenced by American culture. His works illustrate the cultural transformations and changes occurring in the country during this time. Vicente Manansala is regarded as one of the most successful Filipino painters in the West, alongside Fabian de la Rosa. He passed away on August 22, 1981, in Manila.
