Veit Stoss
Veit Stoss (1447–1533) was a German sculptor, woodcarver, painter, and engraver of the late Middle Ages. He worked in Southern Germany and Bohemia and is the creator of the famous carved altar of St. Mary's Basilica in Krakow. His work influenced the late Gothic style.
Biography
Veit Stoss, also known as Veit Stoss or Wit Stwosz, was born in 1447 in the town of Horb am Neckar, Germany. He was a German sculptor, woodcarver, painter, and copper engraver active during the period of International Gothic and the beginning of the Northern Renaissance. Stoss worked primarily in Southern Germany and Bohemia, with his national and cultural affiliations linked to Germany and Poland. His most renowned work is the carved altar of St. Mary's Basilica in Krakow, considered a masterpiece of late Gothic art. His artistic output significantly influenced the development of the late Gothic Swabian school of carved wooden altars. Veit Stoss died on September 20, 1533, in Nuremberg.
