Vasily Khudyakov

Biography

Vasily Grigorievich Khudyakov was born in 1826 in Akshuat. He was a Russian painter and draftsman active during the reigns of Nicholas I and Alexander II within the Russian Empire. Khudyakov followed the style of romantic academicism and primarily worked in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. He gained recognition as a master of historical paintings, portraits, and genre scenes. Among his notable works is the painting "Clash with Finnish Smugglers," regarded as the first piece of Russian painting in the Tretyakov Gallery collection. Vasily Grigorievich was among the earliest partners of the industrialist and art collector Pavel Tretyakov. He held the ranks of academician and professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts. Khudyakov died on July 14, 1871, in Saint Petersburg.
