Varvara Stepanova
Varvara Fyodorovna Stepanova (1894–1958) was a Soviet avant-garde artist associated with Constructivism and Russian Futurism. She was also a designer, poet, illustrator, textile artist, stage designer, and graphic artist. She worked under the pseudonym Varst and was the wife and collaborator of Alexander Rodchenko.
Biography
Varvara Fyodorovna Stepanova was born on November 5, 1894, in Kaunas. She was a Soviet artist of the avant-garde, associated with Constructivism and Russian Futurism. Stepanova's artistic practice encompassed roles as a designer, poet, illustrator, textile artist, stage designer, and graphic artist. She exhibited and worked under the pseudonym Varst. Varvara was the wife and collaborator of Alexander Rodchenko. Throughout her career, she was active in the artistic and performance spheres. Over the course of her life, Stepanova was connected with the Russian Empire, the RSFSR, the USSR, and Russia. She passed away on May 20, 1958, in Moscow.
