Tsuguharu Foujita

Biography

Tsuguharu Foujita was born on November 27, 1886, in Shin-Ogawamachi, Japan. He received his artistic education at the Tokyo Fine Arts School. In 1913, he arrived in Paris for the first time, where he lived and worked for an extended period, becoming a significant representative of the Paris School and Expressionism. Foujita was an artist, printmaker, illustrator, and draughtsman. In 1955, he obtained French citizenship, which underscored his influence and recognition in France. He developed a unique style that combined techniques of Japanese painting and printmaking with traditions of European realism. He is particularly noted for his nudes, numerous images of cats, portraits of women and children, and self-portraits. Tsuguharu Foujita died on January 29, 1968, in Zurich. His work remains an important part of the cultural heritage of both Japan and France.
