Biography
Tove Marika Jansson was born on August 9, 1914, in Helsingborg, in the Grand Duchy of Finland (present-day Finland). She was a Finnish writer, artist, and illustrator best known as the creator of the Moomin series of books and comic strips, including Moomin comic strips, Moomin Valley, and Moomin Trolls. Throughout her career, Jansson worked in a variety of genres such as fiction, children’s literature, painting, and portrait painting. Her professional roles included author, writer, children’s author, artist, illustrator, caricaturist, comic drawer, ex-libris artist, painter, monumental artist, graphic artist, and comic scriptwriter. Tove Jansson died on June 27, 2001, in Helsinki, Finland. Her cultural affiliation is connected to both Finland and the Grand Duchy of Finland. Jansson’s creative legacy continues to influence children’s literature and illustration.
