Tomás Maldonado
Tomás Maldonado (1922–2018) was an Argentine designer, painter, graphic artist, art theorist, and educator. He created the Ulm model of design, served as rector of the Ulm School of Design (1958–1967), and was president of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design.
Biography
Tomás Maldonado was born on April 25, 1922, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was known as a designer and design theorist, painter, graphic artist, and educator. Maldonado authored many polemical articles, books, methodological developments, and academic programs. From 1954 to 1967, he studied and taught at the Ulm School of Design in Germany, where he developed the renowned Ulm model of design philosophy. From 1958 to 1967, Maldonado served as rector of the Ulm School of Design. Later, from 1967 to 1969, he was president of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID). His professional activities also included roles as a university lecturer, artist, industrial designer, critic, art theorist, teacher, and philosopher. Tomás Maldonado passed away on November 26, 2018, in Milan.
