Þórarinn B. Þorláksson
Þórarinn B. Þorláksson (1867–1924) was an Icelandic painter and one of the first modern artists in Iceland. He was the first Icelander to exhibit his paintings domestically and the first to receive a state scholarship, marking a milestone in Icelandic art history.
Biography
Þórarinn B. Þorláksson was born on February 14, 1867, in the settlement of Undirfell, Iceland. A professional painter, he is regarded as one of the earliest modern artists in Iceland. Þorláksson was the first Icelandic painter to organize exhibitions of his works within Iceland, a significant event in the history of the nation’s art. Additionally, he was the first artist in the country to be awarded a state scholarship, demonstrating official recognition of his contribution to Icelandic culture. Þórarinn B. Þorláksson passed away on July 10, 1924, in the town of Laugardalur, leaving an important legacy in Icelandic visual arts.
