Biography

Thomas J. Somerscales was born on October 29, 1842, in Kingston upon Hull, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. He was an artist, teacher, and sailor. Somerscales began his artistic career in Chile, where he created numerous marine landscapes reflecting the region, as well as paintings dedicated to significant events in Chilean naval history. His works became patriotic national icons in Chile. The genre of his work was marine painting. Thomas J. Somerscales died on June 27, 1927, in Kingston upon Hull.
