Biography

Theophanes the Greek was a Byzantine and Russian artist of the 14th and 15th centuries, working as an iconographer, miniaturist, and master of monumental fresco paintings. He was born around 1340 in Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, and represented Byzantine culture and art. His work combined several genres, including icon painting and frescoes. Throughout his life, he created works that became significant for Russian iconography and monumental art. He ended his life in Moscow, where he died in 1410. Among his notable works are the Don Icon of the Mother of God and the Tolga Icon of the Mother of God, which remain important religious and cultural artifacts. His career coincided with a period in which Byzantine tradition was actively integrated into Russian art, a blend reflected in his creations and legacy.
