Theodor Aman

Theodor Aman (1831–1891) was a Romanian artist of Armenian-Greek descent. He worked across neoclassicism, romanticism, academicism, and realism, producing genre scenes, historical paintings, and portraits. He was also an engraver, sculptor, and photographer.

Biography

Theodor Aman was born on March 20, 1831, in the city of Câmpulung. He was a Romanian artist of Armenian-Greek heritage. Aman’s artistic work encompassed several styles, including neoclassicism, romanticism, academicism, and realism. He specialized in genre painting, historical scenes, and portraiture. In addition to painting, Theodor Aman was known as a printmaker and copper engraver, as well as a sculptor and photographer. He passed away on August 19, 1891, in Bucharest. The Theodor Aman Museum is named in his honor. Aman was a representative figure in Romanian cultural tradition.
