Theo van Doesburg
Theo van Doesburg (1883–1931) was a Dutch painter, architect, sculptor, and art theorist. A founding member of the De Stijl group and the neoplasticism movement, his work spans expressionism, painting, architecture, sculpture, collage, and design.
Biography
Theo van Doesburg was born on August 30, 1883, in Utrecht, Kingdom of the Netherlands. He was a Dutch painter, architect, sculptor, and art theorist. Van Doesburg became one of the founders of the De Stijl art group and the artistic movement known as neoplasticism. His work shows influences of expressionism and he was active across various visual arts fields, including painting, architecture, sculpture, collage, drawing, etching, ceramics, and others. Additionally, he worked in graphic design, journalism, literary writing, furniture and interior design, photography, and stained-glass art. Among his notable works are "Rhythm of a Russian Dance," "Counter-Composition XX," "Counter-Composition VIII," and "Contra-Composition VII." He passed away on March 7, 1931, in Davos.
