His most prolific years as an artist were between the 1420s and the 1450s. Shūbun was known both as a Zen monk (gaso) and as a sculptor. Among his most recognized works are the paintings “Hue of the Water, Light on the Peaks” and “Reading in a Bamboo Grove.” His artistic work was closely connected with the culture and spirituality of the Muromachi era in Japan.
