Tapio Wirkkala
Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was a Finnish designer and sculptor, a key figure in postwar Scandinavian design. He worked with diverse materials and styles, employing traditional craft techniques to blur the lines between industrial and artistic design.
Biography
Tapio Wirkkala was born on June 2, 1915, in Hanko, Finland, then part of the Grand Duchy of Finland. He was a Finnish designer and sculptor who developed both mass-produced products and unique art objects, helping to dissolve the boundary between everyday and artistic design in Scandinavian design. Wirkkala worked with a broad range of materials, including plastic, metal, glass, ceramics, and laminated plywood. His styles encompassed modernism and abstract sculpture. He was also a glass artist, jewelry designer, and craftsman proficient in traditional Finnish craft techniques, which he used creatively in his work. Wirkkala's creative legacy includes thousands of design examples. He died on May 19, 1985, in Helsinki.
