Stanisław Wyspiański
Stanisław Mateusz Ignacy Wyspiański (1869–1907) was a Polish poet, playwright, painter, stage designer, architect, and educator. Born and died in Kraków, he worked during the modernist era and the Young Poland movement. He authored notable works including the drama The Wedding.
Biography
Stanisław Mateusz Ignacy Wyspiański was born on January 15, 1869, in Kraków, then part of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A Polish poet, playwright, painter, furniture and interior designer, stage designer, architect, translator, and art teacher, Wyspiański was a versatile figure of the modernist Young Poland movement. He created a series of symbolic national dramas imbued with the artistic philosophy of this movement, successfully combining modernist ideas with folk and historical motifs. His notable works include the drama The Wedding, the painting Polonia, Portrait of the artist's wife with son Staś, and View of the Kościuszko Mound in Kraków. He is regarded as one of the most outstanding and multifaceted artists of his time in Europe and was unofficially referred to as the "fourth Polish prophet," alongside the Polish "trinity" of prophetic poets. Stanisław Wyspiański died on November 28, 1907, in Kraków.
