Sophia Laskaridou
Sophia Laskaridou (1876–1965) was a Greek painter and feminist, the first woman admitted to the Athens School of Fine Arts. She inspired the heroine of Grigorios Xenopoulos’s play "Stella Violanti."
Biography
Sophia Laskaridou was born on February 15, 1876, in Athens, Greece. She was the first woman to enroll at the Athens School of Fine Arts, marking her pioneering role in early 20th-century Greek art education. Laskaridou distinguished herself as both an artist and a feminist, reflecting the characteristics of her work and social activism within Greek culture. Additionally, she served as the literary model for the heroine Stella Violanti in the play by Greek writer Grigorios Xenopoulos. She lived a long life and passed away on November 13, 1965, in Athens. Sophia Laskaridou left a noticeable imprint on the history of art and the women's movement in 20th-century Greece.
