Sim Sajŏng
Sim Sajŏng (1707–1769) was a Korean artist of the Joseon period, a student of painter Jeong Seon. He worked in academic painting, landscape, animal painting, and portraiture. By age fifty, he developed a unique style of natural imagery based on Jin dynasty Chinese painting traditions.
Biography
Sim Sajŏng was born in 1707 and died in 1769. He was an artist during the Joseon period of Korean history. His teacher was the Korean painter Jeong Seon, whose influence shaped Sim Sajŏng's work. He created artworks across almost all painting genres, including academic painting (muninhwa), landscape painting (sansuhwa), animal painting (yeongmohwa), and portraiture. By the time he reached fifty years of age, he had developed his own unique style of depicting nature, which was based on the traditions of Jin dynasty Chinese painting. His contribution is recognized as significant within the context of Korean art of the Joseon era.
